The 50 Paintings Project

Painting # 35

"Whistler's Mother" by James Whistler

Whistler painted his mother Anna Whistler almost 146 year back.

It is almost 56 inches by 64 inches and amongst the most famous paintings of America, having featured in various movies like Mr.Bean, Naked Gun, The Simpsons and at least 5 more movies and works of fiction.

Currently placed in the Paris Museum "Musee d'Orsay' It is described as the Victorian Mona Lisa.

So naturally if nothing else, people certainly know the name of the painting ...something like Van Gogh's Starry Nights :)

Whistlers mother in law was kind of jealous that he did not paint her....

And what about Whistler's Father ?

This image has been used by America as an icon for motherhood, family values and  a stamp was issued  in 1934.
17 years later Vincent Van Gogh made a portrait of his mother and strange coincidence his mother's name was also                                                                                                                                             'Anna' .
