"The 50 Paintings" Project

Painting # 4

"Girl with a Pearl Earring " by Johannes Vermeer

A 350 year old painting...by the Dutch Painter Vermeer , known as the Master of Light, hangs in a Museum in Netherlands.

But till date no one knows who was the girl  who modeled for him.

Some guess that it was his daughter Maria...
In a novel by the same name she is fictionalized to be a servant named Greit who is hired by Vermeer to model for this piece where she wears his wife's pearl earring....

The Mystery is part of its popularity.

Also known as the Dutch Mona Lisa because of her enigmatic gaze, unknown background and bust length of the piece.

Its like she was going somewhere and just stopped to turn and look at the viewer...And she is about to say something..

What was she going to say? What was she thinking ? Her words though remain a mystery.

Sometimes the questions are more intriguing because they can't be answered...As there is no one correct answer, this painting opens up possibilities for interpretation...

I think she's saying

(Don't women say that even today :))

If you have an interpretation of your own please share...

What do you think she was about to say ?

...........Love xoxo
